Skeptical About Life Coaching?
by Chris Wesley
When I started being coached myself, I fired a couple of coaches. It wasn't until I was a few months down the line that I realised two things. Firstly, and for complicated reasons(!) I was motivated to fail, not to win, and secondly - I actually made great progress, but couldn't see it at the time. My foundations were being changed and those changes precipitated big changes "above the surface" later on, from which I'm still reaping the benefits. Coaching isn't miraculous in the sense that it makes the realities of the world go away. But often our beliefs about the realities of the world are wrong, and once we understand this, we're free to work in new, powerful ways. Coaching is miraculous in the sense that it works so well on problems which have been in place, immovable, for decades. Coaching is not very British. Many of us don't like to introspect on our existence, and we don't like to admit we have areas we'd like to change, and we're not comfortable going to a stranger to lay bear our souls and accept help. Fortunately, all that is changing, and we're realising that we all have these areas for improvement, and that seeking those improvements is not a sign of weakness, but of strength! You only have one life, and I for one, want to make the most of it. I've spent too long living under my own tyranny and I want out! I am a work in progress - I currently have two coaches, helping me in different areas of my life, and I'm looking forward to being someone better than I am now in the weeks, months and years to come. If you feel your session was not helpful, you get it for free. No questions asked. I honestly don't think you can lose. By the way - no-one has ever taken up this option! I also offer my GROW Yourself a Better Life audio CD, which offers very low-cost way to get to know more about coaching and about me, and if you do the exercises, you'll have a great start on coaching yourself. But beyond that, here are some information sources on life coaching, from outside the industry - for your information. These writers are not motivated to paint coaching in a good light, so I think you can trust their views.
